Free Guide to ColRegs; small and large vessel stability, tides. Aimed at small vessel users but suitable for professional mariners. The ColRegs (the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, the IRPCS or Collision Regs) guidance covers all aspects with animations. Stability covers the familiar concepts but also movement of liquid in tanks – free surface effect. Tides guidance covers the causes the of tides and how to predict tidal heights as well as how to use such guidance. Especially recommended for RYA examination candidates.

ColRegs, Tides, Ship and Small Vessel Stability Resource

Welcome to the site.  It’s aimed mainly at leisure sailors, especially those studying for – and training - RYA certificates.  However, even STCW candidates have found the site useful.  Even one USN station is using the materials

At present the site covers:
-
the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea known as the IRPCS or ColRegs
-
Tides:  including causes, predicting tidal heights and use of tidal prediction
-
Stability.  This is a work in progress, so do drop back for the latest

The site maps in each section give a very quick and convenient way to explore within each

There’s enough for a Yachtmaster candidate - but everything’s in “bite-sized” chunks.  The materials are in use in a number of schools and colleges world-wide.  Some of the stability material has been specially commissioned by the Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania.  Permission to use this material is gratefully acknowledged.

If you’re not yet ready for Yachtmaster, just take what you need!

I was selling the ColRegs and Tides parts world-wide on discs (I have a few copies left for sale) and getting great feedback.  Unfortunately some people liked the discs so much that they decided to sell copies.  One person told me that a lecturer was selling copies to students for more than 4 times the price I was charging!  Rather than put the price up by placing expensive copy-protection on each disc  I’ve decided to make the materials available free on this site

Who knows, some generous souls may contribute a few pence … meanwhile, please make the most of this resource
